What we did in Rebecca and Shenagah lesson's
In our first lesson we were assigned a role ( which wasn't permeant) so we can read the play. We discussed within the group what the play was about and what we understood about it. Later on with Rebecca we talked about eating disorder and different types. The class went well as we were intrigued and asked a lot of questions. I felt someway connected to the class as an old friend off mine had suffered with bulimia disorder which is when you eat an excessive amount of food in a short time and then forcing yourself to throw the food up. Thankfully my friend got the help she needed and wanted and is now but it was a really terrifying experience and I couldn't help but feel a bit sad when we came onto the subject of bulimia.
The three eating disorders we talked about were anorexia nervosa, binge eating and bulimia. Anorexia Nervosa is when a person starves themselves. The person is likely to think that their mind and body are fine but when in reality their brain has shrunk and body is damaged. Anorexia Nervosa is a mental illness, their kidney, liver, stomach, heart and other organs would start to shut down. Anorexia can also result in hair loss, skin to turn orange or yellow as their bones become fragile and weak.
Binge eating ( compulsive overeating ) is uncontrolled eating to the point they are either fully stuffed or feeling sick. After a binge the person may be feeling shame or self-hatred. Their body weight may go from normal or mild, which sometimes then leads to server obesity.
Shengah told us to get into groups and write down the plot of the play and then write down metaphors and similes. After we wrote down everything, each group then read out what they wrote, leading on to a short discussion which then lead to us talking about the themes that are shown through-out the play. We were told to pick a theme and act out the theme we picked. My group chose to pick eating disorder.
We decided to start it off with us meeting up and everyone's happy and excited because it's my birthday and I've finally turned 21. We go to a restaurant and order but then Ola says she doesn't want anything, so then I tell her that I will pay for her. Before Ola can say anything Aya jumps in saying that she will pay as it's my birthday and I shouldn't have to pay for my own meal. Ola still refuse's as Aya, Ellie and I force her to eat something. This leads to Ola having a panic attack and then faints. Ellie calls an ambulance and they take her away.
At the hospital, we are worried and wait till Ellie comes out to update us on Ola. When Ellie does come out she tells us that Ola has been suffering from a eating disorder. We walk into the hospital room and tell Ola that we are sorry she felt the need to hid her disorder from us and that we promise to help her get through this and never leave her side.
What we did in Rob's lesson
Our first lesson with Rob was quite fun, we did tongue twisters and tongue exercises. We then did improvisation in groups. In my group was Kaya and Keana, we decided to do something fun and silly. Keana played the role of Godzilla and I was her human wife and Kaya was our sixteen year old daughter. In our improvisation Keana and I are fighting because she killed Kaya's boyfriend and wants her to marry his uncle who is 40 and a drunk ( who is also a monster )and then I give her back the wedding ring and as Kaya and I walk away Keana starts to sing our wedding song.
Kaya was standing almost in-front of me meaning the audience couldn't really see me. Rob called us out on this and said that this is called stage blocking which is when you block the character from the audience. So I stepped forward as Kaya took a step back. We all enjoyed this and while we was rehearsing it we couldn't stop laughing, when we got on stage we tried our best to keep it together but when Keana started signing Kaya and I hugged one another burying our head in each other necks so no-one could see us laugh.
In our next lesson we started to place together scene one and scene two from a vampire story. We started with seating Isobel and Kaya who play Claire and Ella. They ended up sitting front stage. After we moved on to scene two which is the classroom scene. Kai, Emilio and Ola played as school kids and sat in three chairs at the back, Keana who plays Mint was told by Rob to walk around when she's saying her lines to bring it to life. Rob also told the other three to react when Lee speaks because he is the class weirdo. They rehearsed the two scene's over and over again, Rob then asked everyone who wasn't on stage to watch and see what's good about it and what isn't good.
Costume design
For my character Debit, considering she's a school student, I decided it would be best for me to wear a school tie, skirt and white shirt. I was stuck between wearing a blazer or a hoodie, in the end I went with the hoodie and topped it off with a set of marvel rings that you can see me fidgeting with through-out the play. And for my other character Clara, she's from the 1800's. Firstly I started by looking up what women used to wear in the 18 hundreds. After collecting information I then searched on amazon for costumes to wear, I found a few bits that I liked and reminded me of Clara but unfortunately they weren't set to arrive until July. So I went a plain long sleeved black top and a purple long skirt.
Ellie character, Marianne is also from 1800's. Ellie, Ola and I also looked on amazon for something Ellie to wear. We ended up finding the perfect costume. It's was a innocent long white simple dress tied with a pink ribbon just under her chest.
Ola's characters are Point and Bettine. For point because she is a school girl like Debit I asked Ola to bring in a white school shirt, any skirt and a tie. Ola didn't have white shirt but she did have a blue and I told her that was fine. She wore a blue tie to make it and a yellow checked skirt. She didn't want to wear a hoodie and instead wanted a blazer so I went into the costume cupboard and luckily found her a blazer that fit her perfectly. Ola also brought in a grey dress with a red line going down each sides with a pair of boots, this for her to change into for the bar scene. For Bettine, she wore a maids costume because her character is a maid.
Isobel's character is Claire and in the play she is described as fashionable, we had some brief discussions about what she wanted to wear and what I had in mind. We didn't agree on most things but we did however that she will be wearing boots. We needed her costume to stand out, something that would make everyone stop and stare in awe. The idea of black leather jeans and a fur coat or a dress was tossed around but we ended up with her wearing a short black dress with white dots.
Kaya plays Ella and in the play she is descried as someone who is an alien to fashion. Kaya and I talked on the phone trying to figure out what she could wear, because she needed to wear something that made her stand out but not in a good way. We decided on stripy socks, a short sleeved lined top and shorts that were just above her knees. She didn't have a school tie but it was fine because I brought in my spare one. Because she's in scene one and then straight away goes into scene two for the school, I decided on placing her tie on the chair and while the lights go down she will quickly put it on.
Elizabeth plays Letty which is set in the 1800s. I decided on giving her a long black skirt a white long sleeved shirt with frills running down the middle.
Aya played Harriet which like Elizabeth's character is set in the 1800s. For Harriet Aya wore a long white middle sleeved dress. Aya is also an extra in the bar scene so for that she wore a knee length black and gold sparking dress.
Lee plays Frank who is quite a shy, nerdy and timid character. Emilio was in charged of the boys and kept me informed on what his ideas were for him and boys, frequently asking me for my ideas. He chose plain black jeans , a light grey long sleeved polo shirt and dark blue tie.
Emilio played Moon and Lord Ruthven. For his character Moon he wore black tracksuit bottoms, a plain white top, a tie and a black blazer. When he changed into Lord Ruthven he kept the same thing he wore for Moon, I told him to take the tie off but he forgot.
Kai played Briggs and Lord Darvell. For Briggs he wore light-washed blue jeans. a plain white top, a black tie and a black blazer similar to what Emilio wore for Moon. When he changed into Lord Darvell he switched out the blazer for a long blue tail coat and he took off his tie.
Paige played Fillet who is a food technology teacher. She wore a headwrap, a black top and long blue jeans. We couldn't find any aprons so he improvised with the next best thing which was a medium-length almost lab like coat.
The History Of Vampires
Vampires are known not only to be the oldest creatures of mythology but also the most evil, however despite how much we read and hear about vampires the story of how they originated is still unknown. The main characteristic of vampires is that they drink and survive of human blood. They use their pointy sharp teeth to drain their victims blood. Some vampire's have the ability to turn into a bat or wolf. We also know that they hunt at night and don't have a reflection.
People used to believe that one way of identifying a vampire is finding a vampire's grave and letting a virgin boy wander through the graveyard on a horse ( preferably black ), they believe that with the boy on the horse and if they are near a vampires grave holes would appear in the ground by the grave.
A common protection from vampires is garlic however it's also believed that hawthorn and a branch of wild rose is harmful to them. People also used to sprinkle mustard seeds on their roof to keep vampires at bay. They also can't enter buildings owned by people, they have to be invited in and once they are invited in they are free to enter whenever they please.
Everything About Debit
Although we aren't given much information about Debit, we do know that she is a student who is close friends with Point, Moon and Briggs. They are described as 'students who know each other inside out.' When I first read the script and came across the character Debit, I immediately though I want to play her. Also the fact that she doesn't have a backstory excites me because It meant I could create a backstory for her based on what impression I get when I read her lines.
I quite liked the idea off portraying Debit as a sassy school girl. In the script it is implied that her and Point as best friends, who like Debit is also sassy. The backstory that I create for Debit is that she lives at home with both her parents, and her little sister and big brother. Like every family they have their secrets but they also love each other to death no matter how much she fights with her siblings.
Debit strikes me as someone who is a lot of fun and likes to say whatever is on her mind, she can be brutally honest. We can see that in the script when Ella tells the class that she is a vampire and the teacher Mint tells her that she's found a sympathetic ear and Debit interrupts them saying ' No she hasn't.'
Everything about Clara
Clara Webb is a well known prostitute who is dying. Although it isn't implied what diseases she has, we do know that whatever it is, makes her cough up blood. She works in the whorehouse which she also happens to own and is a mother. Clara named her daughter Eleanor and left her at a private orphanage in the hopes of giving her the best life she can get. Every now and then Clara drops off money for Eleanor.
She instructed that Eleanor was told that her mother was dead. At night Clara would visit her daughter and sit on the edge of her bed watching her. One Night Lord Ruthven and Darvell are playing a card game as Clara serves them drinks. Lord Darvell is talking about how his friend died and then was brought back to life as a vampire, Lord Ruthven doesn't believe him and says ' Your powers of fiction are truly compelling my Lord.' Darvell then says he's better off giving it one of the prostitutes ' It would be a fine thing to have an immortal whore, don't you think.'
Clara was listening in on what the lord's were saying the whole time ' He forfeited his secret and it fell right into my eavesdropping ear.' Ruthven departed to the east and Clara told him that if he takes her with him that he will get her constant service free of charge. The two of them search for days and Ruthven gets frustrated as he has found nothing, during this Clara has grown weaker and frail. Clara says the words ' Enteral life will only come to those prepared to die.' Ruthven becomes deranged and angry striking Clara and killing her in a violet and brutal way, he then takes her body and places her in the tomb and leaves.
The next full moon rises and Ruthven is getting ready to sail home, however Clara awakes and finds herself ' Reborn, reanimate and immortal.' Now that Clara is awake she finds herself with a terrible thirst for blood and seeks out Lord Ruthven. She finds Lord Ruthven in a hotel room with a girl he has paid to entertain him for the night. Clara decides that the worst fate for him would for him to die slowly due to all the horrible sexually transmitted diseases he'd picked up over the years. She then tells him he will never be immortal and she kills and drinks the innocent prostitute in front of him to show how powerful she has become.
Out of vengeance and spite Lord Ruthven seeks for Eleanor Web, Clara's daughter. Once he finds her he tells her that her mother is alive and Eleanor doesn't believe him. Ruthven then tells her that her mother owns a whorehouse and ' Sells fresh flesh.' He then grabs Eleanor placing his hand over her mouth telling her that he's dying and her mother has robbed him off life and therefore he will rob her too, she will share his disease which leads to him raping her.
A few days later Clara shows up in the middle of the night to see her daughter. Eleanor tells her that she's dying. Clara comforts her and hold her child in her arms rocking her back and forward. Clara then swears that she will never leave Eleanor again and by making this promise she then turns Eleanor into a vampire.
Evaluation
Personally, I think I did an excellent good portraying my character, Debit. I made sure that whenever I was on stage playing as her, that I was always doing some sort of motion, even if it was something as simple as playing with my rings or moving my hands, However when it came to Clara I think I could of portrayed her better. Because she is described as a slag, I should off went over to Kai and Emilio more and flirted with them while giving them their drinks. Over all I think the performance went quite well and I'm very proud of us. If I could change one thing, it would be that we got to do the whole play. I do also think that the costumes were perfect and represented everyone's characters well, for example, Frank. His character is very shy, reserved and nerdy, Lee was dressed in dark blue jeans and a checked red and blue shirt. Again if I was going to give change one thing about his costume, I would of probably given him glasses.
A vampire story ( Script )
Byzantium is a film that was released in 2013 directed by Neil Jordan based on the story ' a vampire story ' written by Moria Buffini.
At the beginning of the play Eleanor is dressed in a costume from 1812 and is sitting at a small desk where she likes to write. We then see Ella (16) and Claire (21) who are dressed in modern clothing and who are sitting on a train. Claire is trying to get Ella to guess what her name is but Ella doesn't want too and is clearly fed up. Claire then says her name is Claire and Ella's name is Ella and they are the Wythenshawe's. Ella asked what happened to them and their family, Claire explains that they died in a car crash and they only had a dad who recently died. She then begins to talk about her love for small towns but Ella interrupts her saying ' I told you no more small towns. ' She then begins to complain about how she hates small towns and that she will go mad. Claire ignores her and says she rented them a nice little flat and that she will get a job in a bar. She then brings up school again making Ella complain, saying that she feels ancient. Claire tells her that she doesn't know what else to do with her because she refuses to grow up and behave like an adult. Ella then caves and after some debating Claire gets Ella to join A level drama which leads us on to the next scene.
During scene two we are introduced to Frank ( a new student ) Mint ( the teacher) and class students Debit, Point, Moon and Briggs. Mint jokes around with the class saying ' Same old spoilt rebels and fashion victims as last year, not allowed to swear with disappointment or I would.' Mint focuses her attention on the four students that he knows before turning round and asking for the two new students names. Once introductions are out off the way Mint decides to put Franklin ( Frank ) on the hot seat so the class can get to know him better. Moon protests and says 'that's psychological torture.' Mint says that's ridiculous and askes Frank and Ella if she is torturing them but before they could get out a proper answer Mint cuts them off saying ' By the end of the lesson You'll be part off the gang.'
Mint claps her hands as the group of students ask Frank questions staring with Moon who gets interrupted by Briggs who asks what his name is. Frank says he already said it and then Briggs says he didn't listen. Frank repeats himself saying that his name is Franklin. The class laugh as they refer to him as the monster Franklin-stein. Point askes if hes a monster and Briggs asks if he's a wanker. Debit then chirps in asking what school he went to before coming here. Frank says he's been home-schooled since he was a foetus. Point then askes why he's never been to school and he says that his parents, Tina and Geoff had high hopes for him, thinking that if they taught him everything he needed to know by the age of sixteen then he would turn out to be a leader of men, but instead Frank refers to himself as a great disappointment.
Mint takes Frank off the hot seat and decides to do something different with Ella because the class kept asking inappropriate and stupid questions. Mint tells Ella that she's going to interview her while her class mates act out episodes of Ella's life. Ella tells the group of her memory of being at Miss Skull-pepper's school, it was a rainy night and she was six year old and in bed with two of her friends. She then continues to say it was private orphanage and they had benefactors who paid their fees. The class burst out laughing as Mint says that improvising is okay but for now they want to find out about the real Ella but she doesn't stop and Mint decides to go along with Ella's improv.
Moon asks why she hasn't decomposed and Ella's response is that she's been drinking human blood to stay alive. This causes an out-burst within the class leading to Point calling Ella a 'mental emergency'. After Mint has calmed the class down Debit asks if she lives with her mum and dad. Ella says no she lives with Claire who is her legal guardian. Debit then ask what happened to her mum and dad, Ella says her mother is a vampire and her father was a sperm, she never knew him. The scene then ends with Mint asking Ella what made her chose drama, which she then replies with 'my hilarious sense of fun.'
Scene three starts with Fillet ( the food technology teacher ) and her students. While Fillet is talking about what they will be doing, some students are cutting onions whilst Frank starts a conversation with Ella. Frank questions Ella about daylight and then jokes that she'd be a pile of dust because Tina made him garlic sandwiches for lunch. Ella tells him that 'true vampires aren't scared of garlic and live and move in society like everyone else.'
The play switches between modern time and the 18th century so while everyone is in cooking class, Eleanor comes forward from her writing desk and says it's 1812 and she's in bed with two of her friends, Letty and Harriet. Eleanor then goes on to say she wakes up in the dark and sees a lovely women in a shinny dress sitting on her bed. Clara and Claire both say ' I am your mother. ' Eleanor finishes the scene off with ' She replies and I am glad because my mother is dead and now I know she is an angel.'
Scene four takes place at a bar, in which Claire works at. The bar is packed with people dancing, drinking and having fun. Moon plays the fool, Briggs is showing off, Point is playing hard to get and Debit is drunk. Claire is watching Briggs taking in his every movement. Briggs has caught Claire staring at him and now he's staring back. Point notices and tries to get his attention, telling Briggs that it's time to go. Briggs tells her no and Point ends up throwing her drink and him and walks out the bar. He then takes this opportunity to walk over to Claire who was watching the whole thing.
Claire askes him what his name is and he replies. He then finds out Claire is Ella's older sister. Briggs then goes on to describe her as a ' fucking mentalist.' Claire clocks that Briggs is in the same class as Ella, meaning that he is in year twelve. Claire tells him that she could lose her job severing him and he says he never get asked for ID because he looks so mature. Claire askes him if he wants to be her next ' pleasure ' and Briggs says yes.
Scene Five. Ella is sitting as a small desk writing as the characters enter and position themselves. Ruthven and Darvell are at a card table while Clara serves them drinks while Marianne who is no more than a child is cradling a drunk. Marianne tells the audience they are in a ' house of ill repute full of sluts, tarts and men.' She then goes on to say that they are lucky to be here because it's London finest, run by a women called Clara Webb who has survived a brutal childhood and by the age of twenty-one became London's pushiest and most ambitious whore.
Marianne then exits as Clara gloats about her business and how it 'turns over two thousand a year, all of it tax free.' The profit she makes off her business goes into trust for her daughter. Clara then begins to say that her ' daughter is the one thing in the world she loves, and everything she's done since has been for her.' During the card game, Lord Darvell tells Lord Ruthven that he has no more cash on him only a credit note. Ruthven doesn't take kindly to this and says ' your mistaking me for an idiot. '
Darvell tells him that he has a secret with is far more valuable then cash. Clara watches from a distance fascinated. Darvell tells Ruthven that last spring him and his friend was near Byzantium when he caught a terrible fever and fell ill. They were up in the mountains and Darvell tells Ruthven that he knew his friend would be dead before they made it down. Darvell says he came across a deserted cemetery overshadowed by an ancient ruin, a temple with a statue of Greek God Artemis. He laid his friend down to die, he asked for water and Darvell went to fetch some and when he returned his friend had a red mark on his neck like a snake. As he began to set sail home, he saw his friend walking down the harbour. Darvell explains that he was cold and shuddered as his touch almost collapsing. Ruthven laughs and mocks Darvell saying he doesn't believe a word he says.
Frank enters and stands behind Ella. She startled and the characters in her scene freeze. Ella explains that shes doing drama coursework ( writing a play ). She clicks her fingers and everyone expect Eleanor and Clara exit. Frank takes this moment to ask Ella if she can come to his birthday party, Ella says yes and the scene ends with Clara telling the audience that she asked Ruthven to take her to Byzantium with him and in return he will get her constant service free off charge but by the time they reached Byzantium Clara's lungs were seeping with blood.
Scene six is Tina offering Ella food and Geoff and Frank playing quizzes. Ella and Tina join in with the quiz but Frank gets upset when Geoff won't give Ella the points because she got the first word wrong. While Frank is trying reason with Geoff, Tina is offering Ella peaches but she kindly refuses. To calm Franklin down Ella suggest they go outside and take a walk in the car park. Frank tells Tina and Geoff that Ella is a vampire and Tina suggest that she Ella is just anorexic and she's ' embracing death.'
Scene seven, Ella and Frank are outside walking when Frank tries to kiss Ella but she turns away. Ella then says she has to go home, Frank offers to come with her but Ella doesn't want him to meet Claire because Ella believes he will tell her lies like their mother died three years ago due to cancer and that she was put into a care home and Claire fought for her and that they go from town to town to avoid social workers and police. Claire sneaks up from behind them asking who he is. Frank speaks but Claire ignores him and tells Ella that her school called her and that she must come home now. Claire leaves and Ella tells Frank that Claire doesn't like him.
Scene eight, Claire is at Ella's school after Mint called her in to talk. Mint tells Claire that Ella has written a play and that she is very convinced that she is a vampire and that she is her vampire mother. While this is going on lord Ruthven and Clara have entered. Mint says that Ella's play is about an imagined version of Claire and that she was born into a life of prostitution during the 18th century. Claire is stunned by what Mint is telling her.
Mint then continues to tell Claire that Ella wrote that Claire is dying and in her weakened state Ruthven gets angry and kills you in a violent and cruel way and that once you awaken you seek out Lord Ruthven and decide the best way to punish him would for him to die slowly due to all the sexually transmitted disease's he'd picked up over the years. Mint then tells Claire that the group have completely rejected her and that her class student called Dave Briggs has recently ran away from home and that Ella has taken a dislike to him and now the others are accusing her off crimes.
Point, Moon, and Debit enter wheeling a trolley in which Ella is tied up in with a sock shoved in her mouth. Debit and Point are showing at her trying to get her fess up and tell them what she's done with Briggs. Moon is panicking as Debit takes the sock out her mouth and Point is clutching onto a stake. Ella is furious and tells them that she had nothing to do with the disappearance of Briggs and that she is fighting back the urge to tear through there flesh. Ella then says that she wishes she killed Briggs, Point raises the stake in the air to pierce through Ella's heart but Moon is still freaking out and takes the trolley and runs away. Debit and Point shout after Moon to bring her back and then follow him off stage.
Mint tells Claire what happened with the stake and the students and that she thinks it's an good idea to refer Ella to psychiatric services. Claire is against this and shuts the idea down.
Scene nine, Eleanor is sitting at Ella's desk as Lord Ruthven stands behind her. Letty, Harriet and a maid servant Bettina follows. They tell Eleanor that there is a gentleman here to see her and that he has news off her mother. Eleanor is confused because her mother is dead. The girls exit and Eleanor is left alone with Ruthven. Lord Ruthven wants his revenge on Clara Webb, so in doing so he shares his disease with Eleanor and rapes her stripping her from her innocence.
Lord Ruthven leaves leaving Eleanor alone with Ella who keep's repeating ' I'm dying.' Claire then comes on stage with a suitcase and tells Ella to start packing because she keeps telling people they are vampires. Ella says she's not leaving and that she wants to stay. Claire then asked when was the last time she feed and Ella ignores her.
Scene ten, we are back in the food tech class and Ella is ill. Debit is talking to Point and tells her that Mint was found dead in the costume cupboard. Fillet takes out all the ingredients which also includes a bowl off pig blood. Ella walks towards the blood and drinks it. The class freaks out as Debit and Point scream vampire.
Scene eleven, Clara sneaks into where Eleanor is and tells her that she is her mother. Eleanor is crying and Clara hugs her to comfort her. Clara then bites Eleanor's neck and turns her into a vampire.
Scene twelve, Ella is shouting for Fillet to let her out, Fillet locked her in the drama studio after she drank the pigs blood, Fillet also called mental healthcare professionals to take her away. While this is happening Frank has left to go find Claire who is robbing a till. He tells her what happened with Ella and that he wants to run away to London with her. Claire laughs in his face and tells him that ' when she's finished with you, you'll be left hanging like a cheap suit on a washing line. We use people up. That's what we do. We are survivors.'
We go back to the drama studio where Ella is dressed up in a costume from the costume cupboard and Eleanor is wearing Ella's pink nightgown. Darvell enters dressed as a doctor. He tells Eleanor that he wants to help her. Ella tells him that she needs to finish her story and then tells him what her story is about. Claire and Frank enter. Claire tells Darvell that they can't legally section her and then Darvell tells her that in order to help her she needs to take him away. Frank grabs Ella's hand and runs into the costume cupboard where Frank then kisses Ella.
Scene thirteen, Darvell greets Eleanor as she tells him she has finished her story. Darvell tells her that her sister will be visiting her. Eleanor says her mother and Darvell corrects her saying her sister. Finally he asks her what she wants to wear. The play finishes with Eleanor saying she wants to 'wear her costume.'
